What is the Visica® 2 Treatment System?
The Visica 2 Treatment System is an office-based treatment offering an alternative to the surgical removal of breast tumors. It is an ultrasound-guided approach that requires only local anesthesia and is virtually pain-free.
How is the procedure done?
The procedure is done by first numbing the breast with local anesthesia. A small incision is made for the probe to enter. Ultrasound will be used to locate the tumor and visualize the placement of the probe. The probe is placed into the lesion, and will stay in that position until the freeze cycle is complete. This usually takes under 30 minutes.
Where is this procedure being done?

When did physicians start using the Visica 2 Treatment System?
The Visica 2 Treatment System became commercially available for treatment of breast tumors in 2007. Prior to that, the first Visica Treatment System became available in 2001.
What are the benefits of cryoablation compared to the standard treatment options for breast lesions?
In the past, the options for women with fibroadenomas were “watch and wait”, tissue removal with vacuum assisted biopsy, or excisional surgery. The Visica 2 Treatment System marks a breakthrough in the treatment of breast tumors through an office-based procedure that involves only local anesthesia, no stitches, and an excellent cosmetic result.
Can the Visica Treatment System be used to treat cancer?
The Visica Treatment System has been used in clinical studies to evaluate use of cryoablation for breast cancer since 2007. What happens to the breast tumor after cryoablation?
The body should naturally absorb the destroyed tissue in the time span of approximately 3-18 months, depending on size.
