The Procedure

If you think you’ve found a lump in your breast, you should talk to your doctor as soon as possible to confirm whether or not you have a lump that needs medical attention. If the lump needs to be treated, you and your doctor will discuss your treatment options and decide which one is right for you. If the lump is benign, you may choose to watch and wait to see if it changes over time. Or you may want to have it treated because it causes discomfort, emotional distress or you would like further assurance that it is not cancerous.

If your doctor confirms that you have a
breast lump, he or she may want to perform a biopsy to see if the lump is caused by a cancerous or non-cancerous condition and to help determine if the lump needs to be treated.

The Biopsy

The biopsy involves removing tissue from the tumor and having the sample examined by a pathologist. Two types of biopsy procedures are commonly used: surgical biopsy and core biopsy.

  • Surgical biopsy involves removing all or part of the lump in your breast.
  • Core biopsy involves removing a small sample of tissue from your breast using a hollow needle.

The Treatment

Breast lump treatment is done after your doctor has done a thorough clinical exam and diagnostic tests, including a biopsy. The goal is to eliminate the tumor (and the cancer if present) permanently. Your breast lump treatment options include:

  • Cryoablation destroys the lump by freezing it, and it will gradually be absorbed naturally by the body
  • Lumpectomy surgery removes the lump by cutting (excising) it from your breast

The Visica® Treatment System was developed by Sanarus to provide women with a minimally invasive alternative to surgical breast lump removal.

On October 20, 2011, Scion Medical Technologies, LLC (Scion) acquired the Cassi II line of breast biopsy products from Sanarus.
